Acacia’s Threat to Adult Industry
The adult
industry currently faces a threat from Acacia Technologies since
it initiated to seek approval of a class action lawsuit opposing
the whole Adult Internet Industry. The lawsuit contains Acacia’s
patent claim on all information streamed or downloaded over the
internet.
Getting an
approval to this law suit, Acacia will eventually possess power
in processing the validity of their patents to either single
company rather or against the entire industry. In short, they
will be on your way asking money.
Acacia
Technologies adopts, acquires and permits patented technologies.
Acacia’s Digital Media Transmission (DMT) Technology, refers to
the reception and transmittance of video-on-demand and
audio-on-demand and audio/video streaming or simply termed
digital audio and/or audio video substance. These elements
include cable, satellite, wireless systems and the Internet.
The DMT
transmission procedure includes a source material library,
identification encoding process, format conversion, sequence
encoding, compressed data storage, and transmission. The DMT
receiving procedure includes a transceiver, format conversion,
storage, decompression, and playback.
The strategy
of Acacia effectively wants to put a tax on every single person
who uses the Internet. This covers video-on-demand services,
internet radio, pay-per-view movies, video news clips from sites
like CNN.com, and even songs from Amazon.com or iTunes.
Counteracting the lawsuit, the adult industry are firmly arguing
that the systems covered by Acacia's patents and the patents
themselves are invalid.
The drawback
of Acacia’s lawsuit greatly affects the adult industry but the
burden will be definitely felt by the internet users as a whole.
In Acacia’s
effort to get unwarranted fees for alleged infringement of its
patents, it is creating an offensive attempt in targeting the
adult industry. Acacia desires a cut for all that moves on the
Internet. As Acacia's "tax" will be passed on to users, everyone
will pay the price for Acacia's prowling practice. That is, if
Acacia wins.
